2nd Annual National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students –
North American (NUEYS-NA) Leadership Development Conference in Seattle a
complete success! By NUEYS-NA From February 15 to 17, 2008, NUEYS-NA hosted
its Second Annual Eritrean Youth Leadership Development Conference in
Seattle, WA. The three-day event, organized by NUEYS-Seattle, was a
tremendous success with Eritrean youth leaders from a number of U.S. and
Canadian cities in attendance. In continuation with its previous conference
held in 2007 in Denver, Colorado, this year focused on the tools and
skills-training needed for Eritrean youth to become effective leaders in
their organizations, communities and personal lives. Youth were warmly welcomed into the event by a
lively reception catered by the National Union of Eritrean Women of Seattle
(NUEW-Seattle) and attended by Eritrean and non-Eritrean members of the
Seattle community. Bearing the theme "Cultivating the Warsai Leaders of
Tomorrow," the conference provided the next generation of leaders the
opportunity to meet and greet other active Eritrean youth leaders from across
the NUEYS network. From February 16 to 17, attendants participated
in interactive workshops and discussions ranging on critical issues,
including grassroots organizing, overcoming adversity, fundraising and
strategic planning. Participants also had the opportunity to share the
successes and challenges of their own local activities and to create a common
platform on how to build a vibrant and cohesive youth movement, both locally
and nationally, that progresses the development of Eritrean youth and their
identity. This included, among other things, establishing language schools,
organizing trips to Eritrea, participating in fundraisers to meet the needs
of youth in Eritrea. The great hosts, NUEYS-Seattle, also organized fun and
adventurous activities for participants to explore the wonderful sites of
Seattle and to strengthen the bonds among the youth in a lively environment. The conference was an excellent opportunity for
Eritrean youth from all walks of life to build transnational bonds, provide
support and encouragement to one another and to unify scattered youth
initiatives in North America. With elevated spirits and greater organization
we are certain to achieve great heights in the year to come. We look forward
to next year's conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota and we invite all youth
around the country to join us in sharing this momentous experience. leadership skills, I commend you for your dedication.
